Jones Point Park

As a component of the urban design and landscape improvements associated with the $2.2 billion Woodrow Wilson Bridge Replacement Project, AECOM designed a 60-acre community park along the banks of the Potomac River in Alexandria, Virginia. Numerous historic and archeological sites throughout the park make it one of the more important historical places in the region.

Design elements of the park include multi-purpose active recreation fields, a waterfront promenade on the historic shipyard finishing pier, a large central event lawn, and trails through conserved and protected urban woodlands.

  • Historic areas are linked by regional multi-purpose trails, walkways, and the Mount Vernon trail Community gardens
  • Urban forest preservation, woodland infill, and a landscape restoration program create a sustainable urban environmental overlay
  • Distinct use zones are interspersed with historic and archaeological interpretive elements
  • The Jones Point lighthouse and historic District of Columbia south cornerstone are protected and restored
  • Integrated urban watershed and stormwater management design preserve on-site wetlands, low-land forest cover, and sensitive environmental areas
  • Jones Point Park is a National Park Service (NPS) property managed by the City of Alexandria. The project included coordination with the Virginia Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration, National Park Service, and City of Alexandria
